Do You Really Need to Reapply Sunscreen?
You applied your SPF 50 before leaving home this morning. It’s now lunchtime. Are you still protected?
The answer depends on what you’ve been doing, but if you’re spending time outdoors, sunscreen isn’t something you apply once in the morning and forget about for the rest of the day.
Why does sunscreen need to be reapplied?
Sunscreen doesn’t maintain the same level of protection indefinitely. Throughout the day, sweating, swimming, towel drying and simply rubbing or touching your skin can reduce the protective layer you applied in the morning.
Dermatologists recommend reapplying sunscreen approximately every two hours when outdoors, and sooner after swimming or sweating. Even a high SPF doesn’t mean you can skip reapplication.
Regular sun protection is about much more than avoiding sunburn. UV exposure contributes to premature skin ageing, wrinkles, loss of firmness and pigmentation, while also increasing the risk of skin cancer.
But what if you’re wearing makeup?
This is where reapplication often becomes difficult. Nobody wants to remove their makeup in the middle of the day just to apply sunscreen again.
Fortunately, sun protection is now available in different formats, including sticks and sprays, which can make reapplication more convenient. The important thing is to use the product correctly and apply enough to achieve proper coverage.
